Production Meeting Notes
:August 28: We had our first production meeting. Cori wants the costumes to have the same color palette as a sunset: red, orange, yellow, and purple. She wants the bad guys in purples, the royals in red, and everyone else in orange and yellow. She is hoping for transformation dresses for the oranges rather than a set piece and sent me a photo that she found on pinterest. She wants masks only for the masked ball and not for the rest of the play. She gave us a cast list. Many actors are playing more than one role. Silvio and Tartaglia will be dressed as playing cards for the masked ball.
Sept 3: Work study day: Kelly asked for us to do a project for him. We took two of the old BPAC water damaged curtains and cut them down from 30 feet to 16 feet and hemmed them to be rehung in the Black Box on the back wall to help with the sound. It took all day with two of us working on it. Next week we'll be doing two more for each side.
Sept. 4: Second production meeting. We agreed on golf umbrellas instead of transformation dresses. She asked for masks to be ready for rehearsal next Monday. Everyone will be in a mask except Silvio, Tartaglia, and the narrator, who will be dressed like Where's Waldo. Fata Morgana will have a mask but not a commedia one, one that disguises her as an old hag. The rest of the ensemble will be at the masked ball as guests or palace servants. She discussed the props list and we need four large portraits of Silvio, Tartaglia, Fata Morgana, and Truffaldino. I suggeted asking my two art majors if they wanted to do it. They're supposed to be not good drawings, but they need to be good enough so that the characters are recognizable.
In crew, we pulled out all of the commedia masks to sort through them and see how many we needed. The latex ones that Kelly bought for Servant were somewhat smooshed. Nathan used a hair dryer to heat them up and remold them into the proper shapes. One of the thermoplastic set that I made had lost one eyebrow and both sides of its moustache. We found the moustache pieces and glued them back on and then I had to cut a new eyebrow. The color wasn't an exact match, but it's close enough. I pulled white fabric for the playing card costumes and all the red and gold trim I could find. Cori wants them soft like tunics not rigid like sandwich boards. I'm going to give that project to Melissa. She suggested taking the playing card images to Office Depot and have them printed on the fabric like a banner. Office Depot does that but I checked pricing and it's $200 each, so that's price prohibitive, since we would need four. She suggested we project the images onto the fabric and draw the playing cards ourselves. I concurred. Although, I don't want the images painted on, I want them to look embroidered or quilted. At a minimim all they need to have on them is the K and J and hearts in the corners. I can source appliques on Amazon that would already be done and we just iron them on.
Sept. 5: I assigned masks to all the characters and we got down the wig head stands to keep them on and labeled both the stands and the masks for rehearsal on Monday. I ordered leggings for all the men in the cast since our collection of Men's tights was over 20 years old and were all thrown out in the clean out last fall. I also ordered a shirt for Hayden, watercolor paper for the portraits, tights for Fata Morgana, a Where's Waldo costume for the Narrator, and three orange golf umbrellas for the Oranges.
Sept. 10 After further consideration on the playing card tabards, we decided "painting" with sharpie markers was the best idea. Our makerspace just got a quilting maching which we are going to use to quilt the tabards to give them more body. We'll use a very thin cotton batting so it's still light weight. The pants to the doublet that I made for Josh Purvis for Magic Flute has disappeared from costume storage. I looked for fabric remnants from the original project and found all three as well as the original pattern! Melissa took that project on and got all the pieces cut and serged, then took them home to assemble. We didn't have enough of the orange print, so I found a similar light yellow print and dyed it orange to match. I also dyed the pink bloomers we made for Crazy Sue the pig from Chicken Opera blue with Rit poly dye so they are now a perfect matching purple to her gown. I found remnants of the fabric we used for Hastings' costumes from Three Musketeers. I plan to use it for the Wind God, but the actor it was made for had a much smaller waist than the current actor, so the plan is to rip the pants up the side seams and add in a two inch strip to give it the extra width. Melissa also took that project home with her.
Sept. 11 I pulled corsets and petticoats for the women and finished copying the Jack of Hearts design on the tabard pieces. Sarah and Morgan started using Sharpie markers to color in the KIng of Hearts tabard pieces. Rehearsal was cancelled that evening due to the Utah campus shooting the day before and our Brett Kavanaugh visit that night. I made a fitting sign up schedule and emailed it to the SM. I measured the last actor to come in. I met with Hayden Scott about his Truffaldino mask that he needs to wear over his glasses. We switched out the mask to get a bigger one and then I plan to pad the inside of it with foam so that it won't scratch his glasses, as well as make the elastic smaller.
Sept 12: The men's leggings arrived as well as the watercolor paper. They sent me the wrong size (way too small) so I had to order another pad. We restocked the costumes we won't be using. Nathan and I sponge painted the umbrellas to give them more texture and then kept on working on coloring in the King of Hearts tabard pieces.
Sept 15: We started fittings on the men. I did 8 fittings, plus worked some more on the coloring in the cards. I finished both of the King of Hearts pieces. Over the weekend, Melissa enlarged the Wind god pants and stitched together Truffaldino's pants. She also bought some batting for the tabards and some backing fabric for the quilting process.
Sept. 16: Continued fittings on the men. I did 2 fittings, plus finished coloring one of the Jack of Hearts pieces and started the second one.
Sept. 17: Spent most of the day hemming two more stage curtains. It only took half as long as the first time, so Melissa and I finished more alterations and I kept working on the playing cards. I did two more fittings also.
Sept. 18: Did the last fitting on the men, ordered more tights and dance shoes, finished coloring in the playing cards. Cut out the batting for the cards, but only had enought to do one of each .
Sept. 19: Convocation closed the school at 12 so no crew hours this afternoon.
Sept. 22: Doing two fittings on the women this morning and another three in the afternoon.
Sept. 23: Did two more fittings on the women.
Sept 24: worked on the card tabards all day. Did another fitting on Creonta. Melissa took home three of the women's costumes to alter. Jasper did the Truffaldino portrait.
Sept. 25: Jaspar did the Fata Morgana portrait.
Sept 26: Jasper did the three oranges portrait and Sam and Nathan made the kitchen armor for Tartaglia.
