Production Meeting Notes
I started pulling all the things I remembered using last time we did this show (2019) while I was pulling for MCM 1940. The first things I got out were the crinolines and the petticoats, then the dresses that we made to go over the crinolines, then the Empire waist dresses. Then I dug out all the men's costumes from Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, and everything else that was remotely 19th C. Friday I dug out the black unitards, skull masks, black balaclavas, and skeleton gloves, plus the cheesecloth drapey things, and the red shrouds from Richard that I used on the liches from She Kills Monsters. Then I got out all the corsets, tube tops, undershirts, cravats, top hats, and the white stockings. i ordered four more top hats in colors other than black as well.
10-9 Monday: I measured some more actors, mostly the singers. then I assigned undershirts, stockings, skeleton dancer costumes, tube tops and corsets to the appropriate cast members. Tomorrow I'll assign the crinolines.
10-10 Tuesday: I measured four more singers. Then I assigned crinolines to the women who need them. Eight of the crinolines were in need of repair, so we were able to get four of them repaired today. The top hats I ordered came today: maroon, chocolate, light brown, and gray. Tomorrow we need to finish repairing the crinolines and then deal out petticoats out to all the women.
10-11 Wednesday: We finally had a production meeting. The opera students will be at Fezziwig's party but not Fred's. The dancers will also be at Fezziwig's party and will push the bed around, but they will do it in their regular costumes the first and second time, but in their ghost costumes the last time. I cut out pants and a vest for Fezziwig. Joe and I decided on the dress that Belle will wear for her solo and pas de deaux so she has plenty of leg room to dance. It's going to be the one I made for Yseult for Tristan and Isolde a few years ago. It's stretch velvet and is the correct silhouette and has plenty of fabric in the skirt. Jason measured Tiny Tim at rehearsal for me.
10-12 Thursday: I serged and sewed together the vest and pants for Fezziwig. I did a fitting on Arlette. Venus pulled shoes for the men and Naomi pulled shoes for the women. I ran out of rack space so Maddy and Holden brought over one from the BPAC. Destiny and Laiden ripped out the skirt hems for the Cratchit women because the new actors are much taller than the last actors. Randy brought all the fabric over from the Bunraku puppet that played the Ghost of Christmas Future last time so I can use it for his costume this time.
10-13 Friday: No one came back for lab hours, I finished assigning petticoats and crinoline costumes for the ladies. I pulled Scrooge's coat, vest, and nightgown. I still need to find the nightcap, and pants for him. I discovered that the tar from the roofing project has dripped down the interior walls of costume storage and have created a huge mess and stink.
10-14 Saturday: I assigned Fezziwig dressed for the ladies and pulled costumes for Josie and Mrs. Dibler, and Gentlewoman #1. 10-1
10-15 Sunday: I had to hang up a bunch of things in storage so that I had an empty rack for the rest of the men's costumes. I dealt out shirts, pants, vests and jackets. 3-6
10-16 Monday: I did five fittings on Fred, Young Ebeneezer, Belinda, the narrator, Miriam, and Scrooge.
10- 17 Tuesday: I did a ton of fittings from the time class was over till 5 pm: Rachel, Venus, Jeff, Marley, Christmas Past, Alyssa, Nathan, Chuckie, Goose Boy, Tiny Tim, and Camellia.
10-18 Wednesday: More fittings on Lanie, Keke, Sami, Hayden.
10-19 Thursday: fittings starting at 11 on Morgan, Maddy, Meg, Meghan, Randy, Caleb, Luke, Haleigh, and Henry.
10-20 Friday: is PD day so I can't have lab hours or do any fittings.
10-21 Saturday: did Jason's fitting.
10-23 Monday: make Mrs. Fezziwig dress
10-24 Tuesday: got covid booster and had to leave. couldn't get any work done anyway, maintenance was replacing lights in the shop and had to turn off the power while doing it.
10-25 Wednesday: still out due to covid
10-26 Thursday: shop and storage was flooded, had to cancel class, got nothing done
10-27 Friday: shop was dry, had makeup class, made Mrs. Cratchit's shirt; had students get everything off the floor to prepare for more rain this weekend. Went by after the football game was rained out to check but the shop was still dry.
10-28 Saturday Went by to check on the shop. It was dry, but then it started leaking again everywhere about 2. Called dispatch, they called the roofers, they did something because eventually it stopped leaking but it had also stopped raining by then. I worked 1-4 and 6:30-10:30 made Mrs. Cratchit skirt, pinafore apron, and hat.
10-30 Monday: The shop is still dry so that's a miracle. I ordered 3 more rolling racks this weekend, so we'd have enough space to put all the costumes in the BPAC without having to move over the non-rolling racks. This morning Nova and I cleared two more racks of things that needed to be put back into storage. There's only one rolling rack left of things that need to go back, there's just no space for it. I did a hair and makeup research graphic for the actors this afternoon. Designer run through tonight from 6:30-9:30.
10-31 Tuesday: Worked on the show notes in class instead of their draping projects. Got a lot of alterations done. And then some people stayed after to help. Everyone came to class in a costume so that was fun.
11-1 Wednesday: had more help putting on hooks and eyes and snaps all afternoon. I finished out Meg's Fezziwig dress with a placket, sleeves, and a hem. I got away from the horrible banging on the roof and the tar smell for the GSA meeting at 4 which was a welcome relief. There were things coming out of the hole where the missing ceiling tile was.
11-2 Thursday: The rolling racks arrived today, the students put them together. I finally gave up looking for extra fabric to enlarge a jacket we made for the last time and just cut a new one and a new vest for Hayden. The smell of the tar and the continual banging on the roof is making me nauseated and insane. I can't think anymore. I can usually handle drums on one side and rock band on the other, but I can't handle all that and the tar smell and the incessant monster like growling both from the tar machine and the vocalist in 111. I called in the Sewcial Circle of other faculty and staff that sew to help me last night: Becky Parker, Lorraine Stansel, Hollie Betz, and Rachel Kramer answered the call. We got so much done. Lorraine even took stuff home with her. I made another jacket for Hayden from scratch.
11-3 Friday: I could only stay till 3 today but Maddy and Eden did more handsewing after class. I dealt with enlarging the costume for Miriam which involved making a new waistband for the skirt and letting out much of the old gathering as well as adding two panels in the CB of the bodice. There wasn't any more of the fashion fabric left, so I had to use the waistband for that and just sew the panels onto the skirt directly.
11-6 First Dress: I got a new waistband onto the overskirt for Marisela. Maddy came in and sewed more hooks and eyes and snaps on everything. Lorraine came in and did some sewing for me as did Joe. Joe Taylor is the only director that I've ever had that comes in and sews when the costumes get behind. I chopped off 13" from the hem of the mindflayer costume for Ghost of Christmas Future.
11-7 Second Dress: I got hook and eye tape back onto Marisela's bodice. I got the hood sorted out for GOCF.
11-8 Third Dress: I finished Christmas Present's costume and pulled some winter accessories for the Cratchit family. Then, just when we thought we were going to be fine, right before 5:00, the main sewer line went kablooie and spewed waste water into the dressing rooms and green room. Luckily only two costumes got wet and they were machine washable. I finally sat down for lunch at dinnertime while I'm waiting to put the wet costumes in the dryer. Everyone is having to get ready in the bandhall with no mirrors and the water has been turned off in two buildings. This show is cursed.
